    Our Story

Two decades of teaching art, now reaching homeschool families everywhere.

From a 2002 classroom in Colorado to an online school for families across the country, the mission has never changed: real technique, taught with patience.

    Our Story

    Where it started

    2002

The first Hummel Art School courses

The first Hummel Art School courses were offered in 2002 to Colorado homeschooling families and co-ops. It became the beginning of an adventure where both Benjamin and Cherish went on to excel in their illustration and design careers, while also later working with local rec centers and universities to develop essential programs for academic advancement in the arts.

Over the years we have taught hundreds of students one on one how to improve their artwork. In 2026 we are excited to officially launch this online platform, so we can take the expertise we have developed in relaying quality art education to more families outside the limits of in person classes.

We will also be re-energizing our in person classroom experiences for those who can meet with us in Golden, Colorado. Please contact us if this is interesting to you, and let us know what classes you would want your students to take first.

Decades later, the school still carries that same founding belief: that real technique and a good time are not opposites, and that classical drawing and design training belongs in the homeschool room as much as in any studio.
